Bex Glover

I really enjoyed finding the work of illustrator Bex Glover this week- and the way she combines painted watercolours, inky lines and digital textures. She is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer based in Bristol where she works under the name severn studios. Her inspiration usually comes from nature, the environment and humour and her distinctive style has been used in a variety of projects and exhibitions. I particularly liked her animal portraits especially Mildred the Surfing Sheep!

Creature Curiosity

Here's my submission for a project called Creature Curiosity- artists are invited to draw either the front or back end of an animal/imaginary monster and then children will be asked to draw the other end. My creature initially started off as a chameleon but then I decided to add scales and thick blue hair and finally once I began colouring him he took on a life of his own... so now I've just named him a Scaly-saur.
For more info on the project hop over to the website- and perhaps you'll have a go at creating your own imaginary creature!

MY FRIDAY FIND

I've been meaning to be a bit more community minded on my blog, so have decided to share on Fridays about other creative people I find in and around my online wanderings- I'll call it My Friday Find. Hopefully I'll manage a weekly submission but if not it'll definitely be on a Friday! Anyways for my first FRIDAY FIND here's the work of a fellow artist I stumbled across a while back when looking at MOO mini cards. Her name is Lorrie Whittington and she has her home near Chichester on the south coast of England. She specialises in drawing, painting, fibre art and photography using both traditional and digital ways of working. I particularly like her organic looking illustrations which are inspired by the sea and nature. She works under the name of Illusio Creative and as well as selling her wares via her art shop online she also is editor of the Chichester Creative Network Magazine and part of the editorial team for UK handmade!  Enjoy...

Stanley Moves in...

I'd like to introduce you to a new friend of mine- a fairy called Stanley. No I'm not going mad, I've just been working on creating the illustration for a character of a new book about a grumpy fairy who likes to live under a drip in a washbasin. The author Jack Ross aka Bill Kirton contacted me via a mutual friend-Fiona Jane, and from there he and I have been bringing Stanley to life. It's been a fun project to work on- and certainly been interesting to be able to breath life into a character that someone else has only written about. It's also funny how once the main image of Stanley came to be, he has become more like his own person and there are stances and moods that define and suit him more than others...in particular are moody, angry, miserable.

It's also been good to expand my portfolio and stretch out into children's book illustration. I hope there will be more opportunities to take Stanley and expand his character and mood -I'm already working on a Christmas related story and other covers for Stanley and his adventures. The first book is hoping to be published before Christmas and I'll let you know when it is available!
